Doku The self’ is a 36 minutes video work in which an avatar - based on Yang - goes trough a journey of continuous death and rebirth. In six Digital realms that represent different stages of the Buddhist concept of Samsara, the cycle of birth, death and being reborn, the superhero like figure undergoes all kind of all too human emotions, from fear and anxiety to letting it all go.

Traditional Chinese medicine, buddhism and spirituality are one of the cornerstones of Lu Yang’s work. Combining tradition with the world of manga, design and video game, using advanced techniques Yang creates an intriguing universe of her own. Creating avatars is Yang’s way of expanding her own existence, existing outside of her own body, outside the rules and norms of the physical world.

Doku stands for the Japanese ‘Dokusho Dokushi’, a way of saying meaning, ‘we will die alone, and we are born alone’, in ‘Doku the self’ Yang invites us to be part of the ride.
